DIY Cheap Mini Roast Chicken Dinner

After a busy week at work, weekends are for resting, having fun, relaxing and taking it easy!  Therefore, when cooking I like to have something tasty, simple and easy to cook - something you can bung in the oven for a set time without any faffing about.

That's why I enjoy things like the Tesco Mini Roast Chicken Dinners as it's not a microwaveable meal, it's proper meat in a foil container that you simply put in the oven for 30 minutes and it even includes some gravy!

At £5.65 (or 2 for £8) it's not exactly cheap, but then it's not your run of the mill ready meal either, you get proper food that's quick and easy to cook.

The question is though, can you prepare your own Mini Roast Chicken Dinner from buying all the bits individually?...

My partner isn't a fan of stuffing so I will be substituting that for another sausage each!

Portions: 2

Ingredients

  • Foil Containers - £2.50 for 12 - 21p each
  • 2 Chicken Breast Fillets - £2.34 - £1.17 each
  • 12 Pork British Chipolata Sausages - £3.30 - 28p each
  • Bisto Chicken Gravy Granules - £2 - 10p per serving
  • Streaky Bacon - £2.29 - 16p per slice
1 foil tray (21p) + 2 chicken breasts (£2.34) + 4 sausages (£1.12) + 2 slices of bacon (32p) + 2 portions of gravy (20p) = £4.19

So to answer the question is it cheaper to make your own Mini Roast Chicken Dinner?  Not if you don't buy in bulk!  If you shop around and buy 1kg of chicken and buy more sausages (currently £3.30 each or 2 for £5 making them 21p each) then you could make your own mini oven meal cheaper that buying a ready packed one from Tesco but you'd need to make sure you have plenty of room in the freezer.

Equipment

  • Foil Trays
  • Oven

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken and sausages in a foil container
  2. Bake at 180°C for 30 minutes
  3. Make the gravy

Serving Suggestion(s)

Serve with vegetables and potatoes for a full roast dinner!
