Cooking With MSG For The First Time

Time to give the MSG I got from Amazon the other day a try and what better way to try it than some delicious home made egg fried rice with mushrooms and prawns?!

If you have ever made your own egg fried rice, you will already know it is so much more delicious than you'll get from any takeaway!  But can I make it taste even more amazing by using a sprinkling of MSG, lets find out!

The small bowl on the right is the one with MSG in it.  I wasn't sure how much to add so I just added a tiny amount but couldn't really taste a difference so I had to add a sprinkling more...

Not as salty as I thought it would be and it did make the egg fried rice taste different.  Whether it made it taste better I couldn't say as fresh home cooked egg fried rice is scrumptious on it's own before adding anything like MSG!

At the moment I would say the Jury Is Out on this one, only time will tell if I find adding MSG improves the taste of my dishes or not.

Classic 1980s Prawn Cocktail Recipe

Ingredients

  • Cooked and Peeled Prawns
  • Seafood Sauce
  • Iceberg Lettuce
  • Lemon Slice
Optional
  • Paprika
  • Cucumber
  • Tomato

Instructions

  1. Place the Prawns in a bowl and mix in as little (or as much) seafood sauce as you like.
  2. Chop up the lettuce

  3. Place the lettuce in a glass or small bowl
  4. Spoon in the prawn mixture

  5. Place a slice of lemon on the side
Optional
  • Sprinkle a light dusting of Paprika to give your Prawn Cocktail that little bit of pizzazz!
  • Add thin slices of cucumber and/or tomato around the side of your glass/bowl

Serving Suggestion(s)

A slice of bread and butter goes very well with a prawn cocktail and is great for mopping up any leftover sauce!

Chinese Style Hot and Sour Soup

Very nice but next time I make this I think I'll not bother with the prawns as they didn't really add anything to the dish for me.  Very hot though - took me ages to drink/eat it!!

Kwoklyn Wans Special Fried Rice

If you've never had home made fried rice then you haven't lived!  There is only one problem, you will never look at the fried rice from a takeaway in the same way ever again.
