I'm not sure why, but for the last few years it has been extremely difficulty to find any Brazil Nuts (in their shells) in the shops. In fact last year the only (random) place I found some what in a Home Bargains store!
Some say the EU has banned them (I know the UK is no longer in the EU, but for trade (and safety reasons)) we tend to align our rules with their rules as it's easier that way - maybe their banned for being too radioactive and turning too many people in to superheros or for causing deforestation, or because they're too bendy or too straight or maybe (just maybe) they're not banned at all and there are just heavy restrictions on them to ensure they are washed clean of any cancer causing aflatoxins (that's the real reason) which makes it more expensive to import them..
Well, this year I have found some in a Supermarket. No, not Tesco, Morrisons, Asda or even Sainsburys (are they any supermarkets left to choose from), well yes there's one, Waitrose.
Most supermarkets tend to sell their bags of in-shell nuts for around £2.50 a bag (OK, technically most are at £3 each or any two bags for £5 which is where I got the £2.50 price from). These nuts were £3.50 each so technically they're a little dearer than regular supermarkets (I was in Waitrose after all) but having said that, I have not found them in any of the other supermarkets so they're neither dearer or cheaper as no one else is selling them.
I have one big problem with Waitrose (which is why I don't normally shop there) is that they are infamous for not being cheap. Why are they more expensive than other supermarkets, because they sell higher quality items which comes at a cost! Are they worth the extra expense, hell yeah!
I couldn't just buy the nuts I went in for - I had to visit the cooked meats section for some scrumptious cured meat (I found some amazing Northamptonshire Ham that you wont find in regular shops) and of course the smoked salmon is amazing.
Now I have my Brazil Nuts I am ready for Christmas to begin!!
