Simply put, Mise en Place is the culinary term for getting things in order before you start cooking. Select and prepare all you ingredients and get all the equipment you need ready so when you are ready to cook all you have to do is follow your recipe.
Not only will this make cooking easier and quicker but it will also help make it fun and enjoyable too!
If you need a chopping board, get it ready. If you need a saucepan or frying pan then get them out of the cupboard - whatever you need get it ready.
If an onion needs chopping, chop it. If a carrot need dicing, dice it! If you need a teaspoon of herbs, measure them out. Get some small bowls/ramekins/plates etc and put ingredients in/on them. If you need a tin of tomatoes, open it!
Then all you need to do is follow your recipe and nothing will get ruined whilst you hunt for you chopping knife that wasn't put away in the normal/right place!
