Whether you're making a traditional Shepherds Pie or a hearty beef stew there is always one ingredient you can add that will ruin your dish in one easy step..
Worcestershire Sauce.
There, I've said it. I've been adding it to homemade recipes for years and always wondering why the things I have made from scratch using fresh meat and vegetables always seems to not taste quite right.
Well, I've finally worked it out and since not adding any Worcestershire Sauce to anything, my dishes have started tasting better!
Worcestershire Sauce Alternatives
- Gravy Browning
- Winiary Przyprawa
- Soy Sauce
1. Sarsons Gravy Browning not only add a rich darkness to your food (you only need a tiny amount to make a difference in colour) but it add a nice sweetness too.
2. Winiary Przyprawa is pretty much the Polish equivalent of Worcestershire Sauce without the after taste I have somehow come to dislike. It can be found in the Polish food section found in most major supermarkets like Morrisons, Tesco and Asda etc. A little dash is enough to make your food pop!
3. Soy Sauce is a fantastic flavour enhancer, but remember to choose the right one for the dish you wish to enhance. Light Soy Sauce is slightly saltier than dark and is best for marinades whereas the Dark Soy Sauce has less salt in it and is normally a little sweeter and best used in stews etc.
Personally I have started to add some Gravy Browning and the Winiary Przyprawa to my dishes instead of the aforementioned Worcestershire Sauce and the funny tang I dislike has been banished to the past! My homemade seafood sauce always tasted a bit 'funny' (just like the store brough ones I've tried) but ever since I have not put Worcestershire Sauce in it, it has tasted so much better.
I wonder if Northamptonshire Sauce tastes any better in my dishes or if it's too similar?..
