Homemade Deep Fried Blooming Onion

Onions are one of the most versatile and tasty (yet underrated) vegetables you can get and cheep to boot!  A Blooming Onion may not be the most healthy way to cook an onion, but by gosh it's one of the tastiest ways!!

Ingredients


Equipment

  • Chopping Board
  • Apple Slicer
  • Deep Fryer with oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare you Onion(s) by removing the outer layer ensuring you leave the root on
  2. Don't remove the root, instead trim it like this so your Blooming Onion doesn't fall apart
  3. Although you can use a knife (if you're careful) an Apple Slicer is perfect for creating the Blooming effect
  4. Gently prise the 'petals' apart
  5. Place the onion in the fridge for 30 minutes or so to dry out the 'petals' to ensure the batter sticks to the onion
  6. Remove the onion from the fridge and bring to room temperature
  7. Turn on the Fryer and heat to 180°C
  8. Ensure the petals of the Onion are spread apart and immerse in the batter mix
  9. Shake off any excess and place in the fryer Root Side Up for 3-4 minutes
  10. Turn the Onion over and continue to fry for another 3-4 minutes until golden brown



  11. Remove the centre part of the onion (this wont be as nice and crispy as the 'petals'

Serving Suggestion(s)

Serve with a dip on the side or in the centre if you have a suitably sized serving dish.
